ROAD TO PRESIDENCY
Duterte was born on March 28, 1945, in Maasin, Southern Leyte, to Vicente Duterte, who was a lawyer and the governor of Davao in the late 1950s, and Soledad Roa, a school teacher and civic leader. His family settled in Davao around 1950. He graduated elementary in Santa Ana Elementary School and finished his secondary education in High School Department Cor Jesu College, formerly known as Holy Cross College of Digos. He was expelled twice from Ateneo De Davao University's high school department due to misbehavior. He obtained his political degree from Lyceum of the Philippines University in 1968 and went on to pursue his law degree in San Beda College in 1972.

Before his post as Davao City Mayor, Rodrigo Duterte first started his career as a Special Counsel at the City Prosecution Office in 1977. After six years, he became the second Assistant City Prosecutor.

In 1986, he assumed his post as Davao Vice-Mayor until 1988 wherein he run the post for mayor and later won the elections. For the next ten years, he succeeded in leading the City of Davao in protecting the interests of the Lumads and Muslim communities.
After his 10 years as Davao Mayor, he next assumed the post for the House of Representatives. In his term, the province was recognized as a first class district – making Davao as a city. And later on, he runs again as the mayor of the city in 2001 – serving the province for 22 long years.

Duterte has been very fickle about his decision to run for presidency in the earlier run of the election season. He gave out hints but all together denied these plans numerous times. He formally announced his presidential bid on November 21 over the gathering with fraternity


With his long years of service, he was recognized with numerous awards. Two of his recognitions as Davao’s City Mayor were the “National Literacy Hall of Fame Award” for qualifying thrice as the “Outstanding Local Government Unit Highly Urbanized City” category and stating that the province as the “fifth safest city in the world” according to the Numbeo.com survey in 2015.

Meanwhile, before recognizing the Davao City as the “fifth safest city in the world,” the city was known for numerous crimes, most especially with drug problems which has been until now the flagship or two of his main priorities, aside from eradicating criminality, as the President of the Republic of the Philippines.
