Breaking the Stigma: Talk about it
Elijah Roderos
“The thought of suicide most often occurs when a person feels they have run out of solutions to problems that seem inescapable, intolerably painful, and never-ending.”
-- Dr. Chiles, Dr. Strosahl, Clinical Manual for Assessment and Treatment of Suicidal Patients
The most common methods of suicide are ingestion of pesticides, hanging and shooting. Most frequent causes being reported are problems with family and relationship. In nonfatal attempts, the most common methods used were ingestion of drugs and pesticides.
Though, we will never know whether a person is about to commit a suicide or not, there are warning signs and it is important to be conscious of the mental health red flags.
Dr. Gia Sison, a practicing medical doctor who specializes in occupational medicine and a strong mental-health advocate, believes that by talking about suicide thoughts lessens the intensity of the stigma a little bit.
“I believe that just talking about it makes the intensity of the stigma a little bit less. I have handled patients who have had suicidal thoughts, and I have found that just allowing and accepting the thoughts behind the idea of suicide may be one of the major ways to fight it.”
Thoughts of suicide, for some, represent an attempt to solve problems. Thus, acknowledging such thinking can be an opportunity to a discussion towards ways that could help the person to be back on track.
Suicide thoughts need to be voiced out, and each person should be ready to lend an ear, and be a leaning support to those who are enduring it.
Preventing suicide doesn’t stop on just being aware. Breaking the stigma means being able to talk openly about it and understanding it better.
